If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like if your favorite actor took you up on your vow that you would watch him read the phone book, “Last Vegas” will give you an idea of what that performance might be like.

A thoroughly contrived and artificial bonbon that gives four screen legends of a certain age the opportunity to chase skirts and punch out guys a third of their age in some of Sin City’s glitziest nightclubs, “Last Vegas” lives and dies by the aggregate charm and charisma of its stars, since that’s pretty much all it has to offer.

The film is a feature-length advertisement for the Aria resort (and its concomitant Cirque du Soleil show) with some male bonding and autumnal displays of testosterone thrown in for good measure. No one would begrudge Morgan Freeman the opportunity to have a flashy dance number on screen, but certainly there could be better venues for him to do so than this sexist sitcom.

After his mentor dies alone, 70-ish swinging bachelor Billy (Michael Douglas) decides it’s time to tie the knot with his 30-ish girlfriend. Since he engineered the bachelor parties for all his childhood pals, they decide to return the favor in Vegas: for Archie (Freeman), it’s a chance to get away from the smothering concern of his son Ezra (Michael Ealy), who’s been overprotective since Archie’s stroke, and for Sam (Kevin Kline), the trip offers respite from his doddering peers in a Florida retirement community.

Paddy (Robert De Niro), on the other hand, has had a lifelong rivalry with Billy — as kids, they both loved the same girl, who wound up marrying Paddy. The fact that Billy skipped her funeral one year previous has only made things worse. Still, Archie and Sam manage to get the still-grieving Paddy out of his apartment and onto a plane to Nevada.

The Billy-Paddy rivalry blossoms anew when they both fall for lounge singer Diana (Mary Steenburgen, burdened with some really unflattering bangs). Beyond that, each of the men gets their little bit of plot that the screenplay by Dan Fogelman (“The Guilt Trip,” “Crazy, Stupid, Love”) makes clear will be resolved as neatly and tidily and blandly as possible.

The situations (bikini contest! bar brawl!) feel like the stuff of a thousand prior Vegas movies, and the characters aren’t written with enough specificity to feel like the lifelong chums they’re supposed to be. But Douglas, De Niro, Freeman and Kline collectively stuff the movie into a sack and hoist it as high as they can manage.

It’s the sort of film where the men are written with something resembling personalities, while the women (with the exception of Joanna Gleason, as Kline’s understanding wife, and Steenburgen) are divided into two categories: sexy young babes for our heroes (and the camera) to ogle, and chubby old frumps that the movie punishes for the crime of not giving Michael Douglas an erection.

Ultimately, “Last Vegas” feels like a desperate attempt to graft “The Hangover” onto “Grumpy Old Men” (or, perhaps, “The Golden Girls”), and while the transplant never quite takes, you won’t lose your affection for the surgeons.

It’s easy to forgot how quickly time goes by and then be suddenly shocked when you realize Robert De Niro is now 70. I feel like I just watched Raging Bull. But, that’s the nature of aging. One day you wake up, realize you’re taking 10 prescription medications, and that you enjoy spending your Saturday nights watching television. It becomes an aging rut, and most of us are watching our baby boomer parents go through it or soon we will be experiencing the same thing. That is why films such as Last Vegas are fun, because it’s relatable, silly, and acts as a gentle reminder that we should enjoy the time we are given.

Directed by Jon Turteltaub, the man who brought us 3 Ninjas in the ’90s and more recently National Treasure, Last Vegas follows four 60-something pals who grew up together in New York. Calling their little pack the “Flatbush Four”, the men embark on life, follow their respective paths, and occasionally show up to each other’s milestone events. Then one day, the consummate bachelor of the group finally decides to settle down with his young 30-something fiancé. It’s an occasion that calls for celebration and the four best friends get back together and head to, where else but, Las Vegas for the weekend to throw a nostalgic hurrah.

Last Vegas features a high quality cast with some of the greatest iconic actors of our time including Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Kline. Everyone involved is charismatic and has their own bit of comedic fun, but for most of the characters, there are serious life undertones they are struggling with, whether it’s health issues, fear of aging, or death of a spouse. Kline’s character, however, is the comic relief with his ailments being more lighthearted and he therefore steals the show delivering the best quips and one-liners. Playing a Floridian retiree who is bored with the rut of his circumstance, he is given a free pass by his wife to go wild for the weekend, which he wholeheartedly tries to do. Kline has always had great comedic timing and his style works very well with this character and setting.

K72A3158.CR2For a movie featuring geriatric jokes that include taking blood pressure medication, making sure this is all covered by Medicare, and being in bed by 9, Last Vegas is a universally funny and accessible film for any seasoned generation. The gags involved are certainly clichéd tropes and jokes, the setting of the film is nothing new, but the script is executed well with heart-warming performances and the whimsy of the story itself is just flat-out entertaining. Thus the film is a win either way. Aside from obviously targeting a specific age category, Last Vegas will additionally entertain the children of those adults because they can identify with taking care of their aging parents, such as with the storyline of Freeman’s character Archie and his son Ezra who is constantly checking in on his father.

Last Vegas is definitely a charming older-generation comedy; it’s sweet, fluffy, and classic fun that leaves the audience with a gentle smile. Even more than that though, Last Vegas is a soft reminder that yes, life is short and it can go by too quickly, but the time we are allotted is best shared with loyal friends, so work out your differences and petty squabbles, and apparently do this in Las Vegas.

Last Vegas is about as safe as a movie about Las Vegas can get. What else would one expect from the writer of The Guilt Trip and the director of Phenomenon. Obviously angling for a post-Hangover slice of the pie the film takes four legendary actors and puts them right in the middle of a city and situation built for easy laughs. And easy laughs is what it’s content to mine.

Four best friends from Flatbush have enjoyed fifty plus years of a bond that has carried them into their latter years and all have sustained ego-crushing blows as Father Time has worked his necromancy. In film language all have one issue that permeates them through the story and as is too often the case in comedies too formulaic in structure they all confront and defeat those issues. Morgan Freeman has become a part of his son’s glass menagerie after a stroke and is kept from truly living his life. Kevin Kline has lost his sex drive. Michael Douglas is averting old age by deciding to settle down with a much younger woman. Robert De Niro has lost his wife and lives in a shell of perpetual sadness. When the idea of a bachelor party for Douglas’s Billy is floated all four convene for a gigantic hodgepodge of situations that showcase how time has passed them by and how four grown men find themselves again.

Mary Steenburgen enlivens the proceedings as a lounge singer who awakens the loins and speaks deep truths. She adds to a group of talent that does a lot of work to keep the affair from being simply too easy and familiar. It’s hard not to fall in love with seeing four of the greatest American actors working together for the first time and Freeman and Kline in particular really seem to be enjoying the moment. De Niro and Douglas spend a lot of time sparring and moving the plot along but even they have moments to shine. It is very much a punctuation mark on a lot of great roles and nominations. It also marks the first and surely only time any of these will share a marquee with Jerry Ferrara.

When it works it’s amusing. Never threatening. Never surprising. Amusing. Some of the jokes hit and other fall flat, at least for discerning viewers. It’s a great date movie for casual film fans. There’s nothing new here but it’s hard to hate a movie able to bring such great talent together as a goof.

"Last Vegas" is rated PG-13 and runs one hour and 44 minutes.

Here's what the critics are saying:

"Last Vegas" is an entertaining movie with a lot of integrity, and it gives all of its actors - all heavyweights and Oscar winners - real moments to dig in and play something. — Mike LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

Though coming off at times like Adam Sandler’s “Grown-ups,” only with Oscar winners, “Last Vegas” is a genial little comedy for the crowd it’s intended for. — Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News

A genial "Hangover" for the AARP set, "Last Vegas" is roughly what you'd expect, or fear, but a little better. — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

Although formulaic in design and programmed to meet its quota of laughs, the film makes a point of going beyond basic expectations into some legitimate aspects of mature friendships without getting soggy about it. — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter
